Reference 126508 arrived in 2023 as part of Rolex's across-the-board Daytona update: a slightly slimmer case, the bezel recessed a touch further, and the long-serving calibre 4130 replaced by the 4131. Rolex sells the 126508 across several dial finishes rather than one fixed look, from plain lacquer to fully diamond-set; this is the black dial with diamond hour markers and champagne-coloured counters, a distinct configuration from the green-dial version of the same reference already in this collection.

This Rolex Cosmograph Daytona wears a 40mm 18ct yellow gold case with a black dial, diamond-set hour markers, and champagne-coloured counters. Calibre 4131 inside, on an 18ct yellow gold Oyster bracelet.

Fun fact: gold-cased Daytonas with black dials and lighter-toned counters go back to the Zenith-movement 16528 of the late 1980s and '90s, long before Rolex built its own chronograph movement in 2000, let alone added diamonds to the mix.

Cosmograph Daytona

Rolex's chronograph, named for Daytona Beach and read against a tachymetric scale

Rolex introduced the Cosmograph in 1963 and named it for Daytona Beach in Florida, laying it out as a driver's instrument with three counters and a tachymetric scale on the bezel for reading average speed over a measured distance. Screw down pushers arrived on reference 6240 in 1965, sealing the chronograph into the Oyster case. The movement went from hand wound to an automatic based on the Zenith El Primero in 1988, to Rolex's own calibre 4130 in 2000 and the calibre 4131 in 2023. The case grew from 37 mm on the first series to 40 mm with that 1988 generation and has stayed there since, in steel, gold and platinum.
