Why this one matters

Audemars Piguet has built striking watches since the 19th century, though a grande sonnerie in a wristwatch stays rare in any decade. The Code 11.59 case arrived in 2019, the Grande Sonnerie Carillon Supersonnerie followed in 2020, and this sand gold and black ceramic execution came in 2025 for the manufacture's 150th anniversary. It is among the most complicated watches Audemars Piguet builds in the Code 11.59 case.

A grande sonnerie strikes the hours and the quarters in passing, without being asked, and the carillon layout uses three gongs and three hammers rather than the usual two. The crown at 2 o'clock selects grande sonnerie, petite sonnerie or silence, and a pusher fires the minute repeater on demand. This reference is a unique piece from the anniversary group, made and sold on request through Audemars Piguet's own boutiques and AP Houses.

The movement

Calibre 2956 is hand-wound, with separate barrels for the going train and for the strike, so winding the watch does not rob the chime. In the Supersonnerie construction the gongs are fixed to a soundboard rather than to the mainplate. Audemars Piguet developed the system with EPFL to raise volume and clarity over a conventional repeater. The case middle is black ceramic, set against the sand gold bezel, lugs and crown.

On the wrist

At 41mm the case is not large, but the Code 11.59 middle is octagonal with separate lugs and a double-curved sapphire, so it wears with more presence than the diameter suggests. Sand gold is Audemars Piguet's own 18-carat alloy of gold, copper and palladium, introduced in 2024. It sits between white and pink gold and shifts with the light. The dial is translucent sapphire with sand gold-toned accents, so the movement shows through.

Is the ceramic there for looks?

It is both a design and a durability choice. Audemars Piguet presents the black ceramic case middle as a contrast with the sand gold, and ceramic resists marking better than gold. The Supersonnerie's acoustic performance comes from the gong mounting and case construction rather than from the ceramic itself.

The round Audemars Piguet that turns octagonal from the side

CODE 11.59 launched in 2019, the first wholly new collection the house had introduced since 1993, and round where the Royal Oak is octagonal. Seen face-on, it reads as a plain round watch, but from the side the bezel sits on an octagonal middle case, and the hollowed, open-worked lugs attach to the bezel alone, floating clear of the case with a visible gap beneath them. The double-curved sapphire crystal is the other tell.
