Message on WhatsAppWhen Emmanuel Gueit's Royal Oak Offshore showed up at Basel in 1993, Gérald Genta, who'd designed the original Royal Oak twenty-one years earlier, reportedly told him he'd spoilt his watch, and later called the result a 'sea elephant.' AP kept making it anyway, and the Offshore is now closer to the volume end of the range than the disruption it was built to be. This 43mm chronograph case comes from AP's 2021 ground-up redesign, which softened the original's edges, moved to ceramic for the bezel and pushers, and replaced the old chronograph movement with the in-house calibre 4401.
This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph wears a 43mm 18k rose gold case with a black ceramic bezel and a black Méga Tapisserie dial. Calibre 4401 inside, on a black rubber strap.
Fun fact: this 43mm case keeps the chronograph's long-running horizontal 3-6-9 counter layout. AP gave the smaller 42mm Offshore Chronograph released later the same year a different movement, the calibre 4404, specifically so it could run a vertical 12-9-6 layout, a deliberate callback to the original 1993 model.
