Why this one matters

Lange showed the Odysseus in October 2019 as its first sports watch and its first stainless steel model in the regular collection, a shift for a house built on gold and platinum dress watches. The case measures 40.5mm, with a screw-down crown, 120 metres of water resistance and an integrated bracelet.

The design divided opinion in the watch press at launch. Pushers at 2 and 4 o'clock advance the day and the date, which keeps correctors off the case flank, and the day sits at 9 and the outsize date at 3, so the two apertures read as a pair across the middle of the dial. The grey dial arrived with the white gold reference in 2020.

The movement

The L155.1 Datomatic is automatic, with a central rotor in 950 platinum, roughly 50 hours of reserve and a 21,600 vph balance. Day and date jump together at midnight, and each is corrected from its own pusher, the day at 2 and the date at 4. Lange finishes it as it finishes the dress calibres: German silver three-quarter plate, screwed chatons and a hand-engraved balance cock, all visible through the sapphire back.

On the wrist

40.5mm sounds large and wears close to it, though the case is only around 11mm thick and the bracelet tapers hard, so it sits flatter than the diameter suggests. The clasp carries fine adjustment, which matters in Gulf heat when a wrist changes through the day. Grey reads darker indoors and lifts outside.

The Odysseus arrived in October 2019 as Lange's first sports watch and its first series-production model in stainless steel, with 120 m water resistance. Day and date sit in outsize apertures at 9 and 3, corrected by pushers set into the crown guards at 2 and 4. The automatic caliber L155.1 was developed for this watch and is used in no other Lange. It has been offered in steel, white gold, titanium and Honeygold.
