Why this one matters

Journe built the Souverain collection around complications: the Tourbillon Souverain with its remontoir d'egalite, and the Chronometre a Resonance. The Chronometre Souverain, added in 2005, took them away. What is left is a watch with hours, minutes, small seconds and a power reserve, and two mainspring barrels working in parallel so the escapement sees a flatter torque curve than a single barrel would give.

The case is offered in 38mm and 40mm, and the model has been in production since 2005 and is still current. Journe moved the line to plates and bridges in 18k rose gold in the mid 2000s, a choice very few makers have followed at series scale. Journe's total annual output is small across the whole catalogue. Demand for the Chronometre Souverain has grown since launch, and specific case and dial combinations are harder to source than others.

The movement

Calibre 1304 is hand wound and beats at 21,600vph with a free sprung balance. The twin barrels are rated at 56 hours. Running in parallel they deliver a flatter torque curve to the escapement than a single barrel would, which supports a more consistent rate across the wind. The bridges and the plate surfaces are finished to be seen through the display back. Service should go through Journe's own service network. Parts distribution is restricted, so independent servicing options are limited.

On the wrist

At 38mm the case suits a 16 to 18cm wrist. In platinum it carries more weight than the gold cases do. The case is slim and the lugs are short, so it sits close and goes under a cuff without effort. The silver dial with its off centred time display reads at a glance. It is a watch that announces itself only to people who already know it.

Why chronometer if there is no certificate?

Journe uses the word in its older sense, a watch built and regulated for precision, rather than as a reference to an external testing body. Regulation is carried out in house.

38mm or 40mm?

Both sizes use the same calibre. The 38mm is the closer fit for most wrists here, while the 40mm spreads the same dial layout over more space, which some find easier to read.

Does the gold movement need special care?

No special care, but it does need a watchmaker who works on Journe. Rose gold plates mark more easily than rhodium plated ones. Parts access is restricted to Journe's service network, so this is not a watch to hand to a general watchmaker.

A naming family inside Classique, where the work goes into the rate

The Chronomètre named watches sit inside the Classique collection, and the mechanism works on the rate rather than on adding indications. The Résonance came first in 2000, the Souverain in 2005, the Bleu in 2009 and the Optimum in 2012. Base plates and bridges are 18k rose gold across the line since 2004, and earlier pieces including the first Résonance carry brass movements. The dials use the asymmetric layouts the house favours.
