Why this one matters

Richard Mille's extra flat automatics start with the RM 016 of 2007, a rectangular grade 5 titanium case, and continue with the round RM 033 of 2011. The RM 67-01, shown at SIHH in 2016, moved that idea into the tonneau shape the brand is known for, with a tripartite grade 5 titanium case 7.75mm tall and the CRMA6 automatic at 3.6mm.

What was new was the combination: the first extra flat automatic in the signature tonneau case, flat enough to sit under a shirt cuff while still reading as skeletonised architecture rather than a dress watch. Two years later the RM 67-02 took the concept the other way, with the CRMA7 calibre in TPT cases on elastic straps. Titanium is the most frequently traded case material for the 67-01.

The movement

CRMA6 is a skeletonised automatic built on a grade 5 titanium baseplate and bridges, 3.6mm thick, which is what allows the 7.75mm case. Hours, minutes, date and a function indicator for the winding, neutral and hand setting positions, with around 50 hours of reserve. The interest is structural rather than complicated: the bridges are cut back until the movement effectively becomes the dial, and the finishing has to hold up under that exposure. Water resistant, but not a swimming watch.

On the wrist

At 38.7mm across and 47.52mm long, with a height of 7.75mm, it is the flattest case in the tonneau range, and that height is what you notice first. It goes under a cuff in a way the rest of the collection does not. Titanium keeps it light, the rubber strap pulls it close to the wrist, and the skeleton dial stays legible in daylight. Smaller wrists take it well.

Is this the thinnest Richard Mille?

No. It is the thinnest automatic in the tonneau case at 7.75mm. The round RM 033 is 6.3mm, and the manual winding RM UP-01 Ferrari of 2022 is 1.75mm. Within automatics in the signature case, the 67-01 is the flattest.

How does it differ from the RM 67-02?

The 67-02 arrived in 2018 as the sports reading of the concept: the CRMA7 calibre with its variable geometry rotor, TPT case materials, an elastic band and athlete associations, in a 7.8mm case. The 67-01 in titanium is the dressier of the two.

Can it be worn every day?

Yes, within reason. The titanium case handles normal wear, but it is not a swimming watch, and the skeleton dial and exposed movement mean knocks are best avoided. Servicing goes back to the brand.

Extra Flat

The Extra Flat line, Richard Mille in tonneau and rectangular cases

Extra Flat is the slim end of the Richard Mille catalogue, and it starts with the RM 016 Automatic Extraflat of 2007, which Richard Mille calls the first rectangular watch in the collection. The line runs in two shapes today, tonneau and rectangular. The RM 67-01 keeps the tonneau outline over the 3.60 mm calibre CRMA6, with a date at 5 o'clock and a function indicator at 2 o'clock, while the RM 67-02 uses the 4.00 mm calibre CRMA7 for hours and minutes only, cased in Quartz TPT and Carbon TPT on a seamless elastic strap at 32 grams complete. The RM 16-02 is the rectangular one, hours and minutes from the 4.12 mm calibre CRMA9 in a grade 5 titanium case held by twelve spline screws.
