Omiwatari is the ridge of ice that forms across Lake Suwa near the Spring Drive studio, said to be the path of the gods crossing. The dial carries that cracked ice in relief, over a slim hand wound Spring Drive that runs dead silent.

Grand Seiko's Omiwatari, reference SBGY011, 38.5mm stainless steel with the manual Spring Drive calibre 9R31.

The reference in depth

Hand-wound Spring Drive, dawn over Shinshu

Why this one matters

Before 2020, hand-wound Spring Drive sat only at the top of the range: the Micro Artist Studio calibres 9R01 and 9R02 in Grand Seiko's Masterpiece pieces, and the Credor Eichi II. Calibre 9R31 arrived in 2020 and brought a hand-wound Spring Drive into the regular collection, and the SBGY series has grown by dial and by case since.

SBGY011 came in 2022 with the asaborake dial, named for the moment at daybreak when light works through the morning mist over the Shinshu mountains, where Spring Drive is built. The case follows the 44GS Heritage lines rather than the slimmer Elegance shape used by the first 9R31 models, so the same movement reads differently on the wrist.

The movement

9R31 is Spring Drive without a rotor. You wind it by hand, the mainspring drives a glide wheel, and that wheel is regulated electromagnetically against a quartz reference. Grand Seiko rates it at plus or minus one second a day, plus or minus 15 seconds a month, with 72 hours of reserve. Without the winding rotor the movement is slimmer than the automatic 9R65, which is part of how the case stays this flat. The power reserve indicator sits on the movement side, read through the caseback.

On the wrist

At 40mm and 10.5mm in steel it slides under a cuff, kandura sleeve included, and the 46.2mm lug to lug keeps it closer to the wrist than the diameter suggests. The dial reads as plain white from across a room, then shows its fine texture up close, with the curved seconds hand sweeping near the indexes.

Questions we are asked about this reference

Does a hand wound Spring Drive need a battery?

No. All the energy comes from the mainspring you wind. The quartz reference is powered by the same mainspring through a tiny generator, so the watch stops when it runs down and starts again when you wind it.

How often does it need winding?

Daily winding is simply the easiest habit. The stated reserve is 72 hours, so it will survive a weekend off the wrist and start again from where it stopped once you wind it.

Can it be worn for swimming?

It is rated to 10 bar, which covers swimming, though it is not a dive watch. Keep it away from hot water and do not operate the crown while wet, and have the gaskets checked at service.

The collection

Heritage

The classic side of Grand Seiko, built on the 1967 44GS and 62GS cases

Heritage is where Grand Seiko keeps its classical designs, drawn, as the house puts it, from the earliest Grand Seiko watches including the 44GS and 62GS of 1967 and re-interpreted with current movements and manufacturing. The 44GS established the Grand Seiko Style, built on flat Zaratsu polished surfaces with the case side and bezel wall slanting inward, while the 62GS was the first automatic Grand Seiko and used a bezel free case that opens up the dial. Zaratsu polishing, multi faceted hands and indexes and dials textured after Japanese landscape and season run across the line, from the snow of the Hotaka mountains on the Snowflake to cherry blossom on the spring models. Grand Seiko sets the collection out in four series, 44GS, 62GS, Spring Drive and Refined Essentials, carrying 9F quartz, 9S mechanical and 9R Spring Drive movements.

Sizes in the family

About 32mm on the quartz references, about 38mm to 41mm on the mechanical and Spring Drive models

Who it suits

For the buyer who wants the original Grand Seiko case shapes and finishing rather than the newer Evolution 9 design.
