The Royal Oak invented the luxury steel sports watch in 1972: Gerald Genta’s octagonal bezel, eight hexagonal screws and the Tapisserie dial that saved Audemars Piguet. Every integrated bracelet watch since exists in its shadow.

39mm 18k rose gold frames this Royal Oak Jumbo (2020), under a gold Tapisserie face.

Fun fact: The 15202 is the Jumbo, the closest thing to the 1972 original: same 39mm case, same ultra thin 2121 movement, same AP logo at six rather than twelve. It was retired in 2022, which is why the price has not looked back.

The reference in depth

From the last Jumbo generation to use calibre 2121

Why this one matters

The Jumbo is the original 1972 Royal Oak shape kept at its original 39mm diameter, here 8.1mm thick, with an integrated bracelet and eight visible screws through the bezel. The 1972 reference 5402 was a slimmer case, quoted by Audemars Piguet at 7.15mm. The 39mm shape and the ultra-thin automatic ran through four references, the 5402, the 14802, the 15002 and this one, the 15202, which took over in 2000 and ran to 2021.

The run closed at the end of 2021, and in 2022 Audemars Piguet replaced the 15202 with the 16202 on the new in-house calibre 7121. The 15202 is therefore a finished chapter with a known end date. Steel examples are the ones most often seen on the secondary market.

The movement

Calibre 2121 descends from the 1967 Jaeger-LeCoultre 920, 3.05mm high, with a full-diameter rotor carried on rollers at its rim rather than on a central post, so nothing stands proud of the plate. It runs at 19,800 vibrations per hour and holds around 40 hours. Watchmakers familiar with the calibre note that the peripheral rotor assembly is sensitive and that parts availability is limited, so servicing needs someone who knows it.

On the wrist

The 8.1mm case is the whole point. In pink gold the watch has a density the steel version does not, and the bracelet drapes differently because of it. The dial uses the finer Petite Tapisserie pattern rather than the Grande Tapisserie found on the larger Royal Oaks. It is 39mm that wears wide, so measure lug tip to lug tip rather than judging by diameter.

Questions we are asked about this reference

Why is a 39mm watch called Jumbo?

Because in 1972 a 39mm steel sports watch was unusually large. Collectors applied the nickname to the original 5402, and Audemars Piguet later adopted it. It has followed the 39mm shape through the 14802, 15002, 15202 and 16202.

What replaced the 15202?

The 16202, launched in 2022 with the new calibre 7121. It is close in proportion but not identical, and it marks the end of the 2121 in the Royal Oak line.

Gold or steel?

Steel gets the most attention. Gold gives you the same case, dial and movement with more weight on the wrist. Wrist feel is the deciding factor for most buyers, so try both.

The collection

Royal Oak

The 1972 steel sports watch that set the template for the integrated bracelet

The Royal Oak arrived in 1972, widely credited as the first luxury sports watch in steel, drawn by Gérald Genta around an octagonal bezel held down by eight visible screws. Everything else follows from that: the bracelet integrated into the case and tapering to the clasp, the Tapisserie dial on most references, the hand-finished play of brushed tops against polished bevels. The line now runs from simple time and date up to perpetual calendars and open-worked pieces.
