The Jumbo descends directly from the 5402 of 1972, the steel sports watch priced like a gold one that nearly sank the company that made it. The line has run almost continuously since, and the 16202 took over from the 15202 in 2022 as the first to carry a movement designed for it rather than adapted to it.

This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo Extra-Thin wears a 39mm steel case, 8.1mm thick, with a Bleu Nuit petite tapisserie dial. Calibre 7121 inside, on a steel bracelet.

Fun fact: the visible change from the 15202 is the date window, moved a fraction of a millimetre outward so the printed date sits centred in its aperture. The monogram stayed at 6 o'clock.

The 1972 steel sports watch that set the template for the integrated bracelet

The Royal Oak arrived in 1972, widely credited as the first luxury sports watch in steel, drawn by Gérald Genta around an octagonal bezel held down by eight visible screws. Everything else follows from that: the bracelet integrated into the case and tapering to the clasp, the Tapisserie dial on most references, the hand-finished play of brushed tops against polished bevels. The line now runs from simple time and date up to perpetual calendars and open-worked pieces.
