The 1815 line is named for Ferdinand Adolph Lange’s birth year and keeps the look of the house’s pocket watches: Arabic numerals, railway minute track, blued steel hands. It is Lange’s history worn plainly.

A 1815 in 39.5mm 18k rose gold, silver, arabic numerals on the wrist. L951.5 movement inside.

Fun fact: The 1815 is named for the year Ferdinand Adolph Lange was born, and its dial follows his pocket watch layout: railway minute track, Arabic numerals, blued steel hands.

The reference in depth

Pocket watch grammar in 38.5mm pink gold

Why this one matters

The 1815 collection arrived in 1995, a year after Lange's first modern collection, and takes its name from the year Ferdinand Adolph Lange was born. The design grammar comes straight from Saxon pocket watches: a railway-track minute scale, Arabic numerals, blued steel hands and a subsidiary seconds sunk into the lower half of the dial.

The line has run through several sizes and calibres since. The 38.5mm generation with the L051.1 dates from 2015 and succeeded the 40mm time-only 1815; whether it remains current should be checked against Lange's catalogue at the time of sale. The proportions are the argument for it: large enough to carry the printing without crowding, small enough to remain a dress watch. Pink gold with a silver dial is the plainest combination in the range.

The movement

The L051.1 is manual winding, running at 21,600 vph with about 55 hours of reserve, so a Friday evening wind is still running on Saturday night. It fills the case. The usual Lange work is present and visible through the back: untreated German silver three-quarter plate, screwed gold chatons, swan-neck regulator and a balance cock engraved by hand.

On the wrist

At 38.5mm, with a published case height of about 8.8mm for this generation, it goes under a cuff without thought, which is most of the point of it. Pink gold warms against most skin tones, and the silver dial keeps the printing legible rather than decorative. On a dark strap it sits equally well with a thobe or a suit. This is the Lange you wear when you are not trying to be seen wearing one.

Questions we are asked about this reference

How does the 1815 differ from the Saxonia?

The Saxonia is the plainer line, usually with baton markers and a minimalist dial. The 1815 keeps the pocket watch language: Arabic numerals, railway-track chapter ring, blued hands and sunk subsidiary seconds.

Is manual winding awkward day to day?

Not with roughly 55 hours in hand. It wants winding once a day at a fixed time, which most owners of this watch consider part of what they bought.

Does pink gold mark easily?

It is softer than steel and will pick up hairlines. Light attention occasionally is fine, but repeated polishing costs the case its edges, so it is better to accept some wear.

1815

Pocket watch tradition on the wrist, named for the founder's birth year

The 1815 takes its name from the year Ferdinand Adolph Lange was born, and the dials follow the pocket watch tradition he worked in: Arabic numerals, a railway minute track, blued steel hands and small seconds at 6, with the chronographs running seconds at 9 instead. Its dials are the plainest Lange offers. The hand wound chronographs sit here too, the 1815 Chronograph and the 1815 Rattrapante, alongside the 1815 Annual Calendar.

Who it suits

For the buyer who wants a traditional, uninterrupted dial, usually with no date, though the calendar references are the exception.
