The Royal Oak invented the luxury sports watch in 1972, and the openworked version strips the dial away to leave the bridges doing the work. The double balance wheel puts two balances on one staff, visible from the dial side.

This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked wears a 41mm 18k rose gold case with an openworked dial. Automatic calibre 3132 inside.

Fun fact: Two balance wheels sharing an axis average out each other's errors, an idea Audemars Piguet patented in 2016 and has kept to itself since. Skeletonising a Royal Oak calibre adds weeks of hand finishing, because every bridge gains new edges that have to be bevelled.

The 1972 steel sports watch that set the template for the integrated bracelet

The Royal Oak arrived in 1972, widely credited as the first luxury sports watch in steel, drawn by Gérald Genta around an octagonal bezel held down by eight visible screws. Everything else follows from that: the bracelet integrated into the case and tapering to the clasp, the Tapisserie dial on most references, the hand-finished play of brushed tops against polished bevels. The line now runs from simple time and date up to perpetual calendars and open-worked pieces.
