The Royal Oak's automatic tourbillon history ran for decades on a thin peripheral-rotor calibre, until this generation borrowed Calibre 2950, a full-rotor flying tourbillon that actually debuted in the more experimental Code 11.59 line and only migrated into the Royal Oak case afterward. It sits in the upper-middle of AP's complicated Royal Oak hierarchy, a genuine flying tourbillon in the brand's signature integrated bracelet case, priced well below the openworked and perpetual calendar tourbillons but a clear step above the time-only Selfwinding.

This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon wears a 41mm rose gold case with a smoked blue Grande Tapisserie dial. Calibre 2950 inside, on its own integrated rose gold bracelet.

Fun fact: the previous execution of this exact watch shipped with an oscillating weight engraved with a large "50" to mark the Royal Oak's 50th anniversary, visible through the sapphire caseback. Once that anniversary run ended, AP swapped in its standard weight and re-issued the identical watch under this reference.

The collection

Royal Oak

The 1972 steel sports watch that set the template for the integrated bracelet

The Royal Oak arrived in 1972, widely credited as the first luxury sports watch in steel, drawn by Gérald Genta around an octagonal bezel held down by eight visible screws. Everything else follows from that: the bracelet integrated into the case and tapering to the clasp, the Tapisserie dial on most references, the hand-finished play of brushed tops against polished bevels. The line now runs from simple time and date up to perpetual calendars and open-worked pieces.
